Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

In wake of mall shootings, officials mull gun measures

In Lincoln Public Schools, that would translate to about 700 teens.Ashford’s proposal would cover the duty to report missing firearms, safe gun storage and tracing guns. It would create a gun violence commission and establish a hotline to report possession by juveniles.* People would be required to report a lost or stolen gun within 48 hours, even if the gun is not registered or is improperly registered. No punishment would result to the reporting person if it is unregistered, but failing to report a missing gun could result in a $500 fine.* It would be a felony to store a loaded gun, or one with ammunition, and a juvenile gets the gun and uses it to injure or kill someone. It would not apply if the gun was stored in a locked box or a secure location, or with a trigger lock; the gun was obtained by an illegal entry; the injury resulted from target or sport shooting or a hunting accident; or the juvenile obtained the gun from a military or law enforcement person during his or her official duties.* A gun found in the possession of a juvenile would be traced to determine how he or she got the gun.A firearm recovered during a criminal investigation would also require a trace.

Dreaming about expedition to that secret lake

About then my friend Jim came into possession of an early model trail bike, really no more than a fat-tired motor scooter on a frame of heavy steel tubing. On our first trip we discovered that only one of us could ride the thing, and Jim putted off up the trail and disappeared out of sight as I trotted along behind. Seven or eight miles into what was then a primitive area, something bad happened to the bike. After Jim and I pushed that ungainly machine back out of the wilds, we resolved to give up the search for an easy way and just concentrate on fish. Soon enough, that area became designated wilderness anyway, with motorized use justifiably forbidden. These experiences took place before the backpacking equipment revolution. We thought we were pretty slick with our canvas packs lashed onto plywood frames.

Join us and live in peace or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you. The alien Klaatu from The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) * * * Often something happens in the world of sport that transcends the mundane realities of life. The San Antonio Spurs winning their 4th NBA championship is a recent example. To Spurs fans, at least, that victory will resonate. To some fans it will offer lifelong validation of allegiance to their team. As fans, as human beings navigating this thing we call day-to-day life, we need these moments of transcendence. They help us to put our own toils in a grander perspective; they remind us that we are capable of bigger things. They help us to celebrate our very ordinary human-ness while they illuminate the intricate ways in which sport and history weave themselves into the fabric of our society and into the threads of our being.

STATE OF THE STATE: Text of Delaware governor's prepared address

Lieutenant Gov. Carney, President Pro Tem Adams, Speaker Spence, members of the 144th General Assembly, members of the Delaware judiciary, other elected officials, members of my Cabinet, state employees, distinguished guests, my family and my fellow Delawareans

I am particularly proud to appear before you for this State of the State address as it kicks off my last year as your Gov.. As you all know, my career in elected public office started in this Chamber, where so much of what I worked on as your Gov. began as a priority for me as a legislator.

My annual appearances before you, my legislative friends, have not only been an opportunity to remember my roots but also reaffirm my long-standing priorities, such as creating world-class schools, protecting our precious environment, fighting to keep and create jobs, and working to make Delaware a healthier state.

The Other Women to Watch

Mulcahy had a next act after she helped engineer Xerox's recovery from a near financial collapse in 2001.

She also has expanded Xerox's business beyond traditional copiers and printers into the computer systems used by customers to manage documents. After radically paring back Xerox's debt, she has leveraged the company's financial strength in the past 18 months to buy three smaller companies that make software for managing legal evidence, mortgage originations and personalized mailings.

Ms. Mulcahy, 54 years old, has said she doesn't have any plans for retirement. But this year, the Xerox board named an heir apparent, long-time lieutenant Ursula Burns, to replace Ms. Mulcahy as president.

Last summer, you spoke of "the Arkansas mafia." How did that go down at the dinner table?

Talking Confederate one day, and civil rights the next Friday, January 18, 2008, 11:33 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Just got off the phone with Merle Black, the Emory University political scientist, who pointed out the dilemma that Republican candidate Mike Huckabee has found himself in over Southern symbolism.

On Thursday, Huckabee declared that flying the Confederate battle flag on the grounds of its capitol was South Carolina's business — and no one else's. (Rival John McCain has been taking heat from S.C. flaggers on the issue.)

"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," Huckabee said.

Intimidating groups of teenagers adorn the landscape

The cute puppies in the windows are a magnet for the under four year old set who love to drag their parents there to inspect the inventory.

Most of the males I observe wear sneakers... young men or old men, sneakers are the footwear of choice. Sandals show up in the warmer weather and they and shorts are interesting because you can inventory the large amount of tattoos that live on ankles and lower legs. Old timers like me are continually asking themselves, "What were they thinking?"

Watching parents with small children create a special appreciation for my idea of family responsibilities. It engages all of one's attention and energy to take a three year old to the mall. With no difficulty at all, the toddlers can break away and run into Olympia sports, pick up a baseball bat, and start whacking things.
