On the trail of the Berlin Wall

I was in Germany during June 2007 along with 14 other professors from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, for a training programme at the Bosch Rexroth plant in Lohr, near Frankfurt. After the hectic training programme, we got the much deserved break to relax for a couple of days and the unanimous choice was a visit to Berlin. The superfast inter-city express train took just about three and a half hours for the journey of nearly 500 km. We checked into a hotel near the railway station ‘Ostbahnhof’, that is, Berlin East Railway station. Frank called on us as soon as we checked into the hotel and we decided to go for the ‘Berlin Wall tour’. The 1.1 km stretch of the Wall near Ostbahnhof in Friedrichshain was at a walking distance from our hotel. We followed the pink umbrella held aloft by Frank in the light drizzle.

LCC registration system produces more headaches for students, staff

Midway through the first week of classes at Lansing Community College, Reba Milow still was trying to register.

The school's online registration system hadn't been working, and the East Lansing 18-year-old, who had come to campus to get her schedule worked out with an actual person, was frustrated.

"I cannot drop classes. I cannot register for classes," she said. "The furthest I can go is to log into my account, but, as far as registration or anything like that, it won't even open up."

Experts: Rutherford economy fine,

Local financial leaders say that while Murfreesboro and Rutherford County's economies aren't in dire need of stimulation, a shot in the arm from the federal government wouldn't hurt.

President George Bush announced Friday he would like to provide a $140 to $150 billion economic stimulus package to jump-start a lagging economy.

The category of fun slowly being pulled from library shelves

The sound of jazz fills the library at Arthur Jacobsen Elementary in Auburn as Art Spencer prepares for his afternoon storytelling session.

"This isn't your traditional quiet library," Spencer said.

Throughout the Auburn School District, Spencer is known for his animated reading sessions in which he brings characters to life.

"Reading aloud keeps kids' attention," Spencer said. "It conveys emotion."

Once considered a mainstay of the school library, this fun, engaging reading time could be in danger at some area schools, educators say.

"All programs are challenged because of state budgets," said Rod Luke, executive director of K-12 student learning and district technology in Auburn schools. "You have to be extremely prudent in how you run programs these days."

To adapt to these changes, Southeast King County districts say they are overhauling how they run their libraries and how much money goes into library programs.

Women accuse auditor hopeful

He faces Republican Lorenzo Garcia, a retired government auditor, in the Nov. 7 election. The state auditor seat is open because Democrat Domingo Martinez has reached his term limit.

Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said his department sent information on the most recent case to the District Attorney's Office on Aug. 18.

"We did the investigation and sent it to the District Attorney's Office and are awaiting their decision," he said.

Schultz said the investigation was handled as any similar allegation would have been and was not given special treatment because of Armijo's candidacy.

Brandenburg said Friday that her office began reviewing the case Monday. She said such cases are difficult to investigate and that it might take months to determine whether there are grounds for charges.

Is DGL the newest relief for heartburn?

Q: I have mild heartburn, especially at night. My friend told me to take DGL. What is that? Would you recommend it for heartburn?

A: DGL is an abbreviation for "deglycyrrhizinated licorice." (Bless the child who ever gets strapped with that one at a spelling bee.) It's licorice minus glycyrrhizin, a compound that can cause high blood pressure and low levels of potassium in the blood if you eat too much of it.

In herbal medicine, the root of the licorice plant is used to help soothe and release spasms from the digestive tract, among other things.

DGL is pretty interesting, because in the lab it seems to increase mucous production and grow the cells lining the stomach. These are the natural protective mechanisms the body uses to protect itself against stomach acid.

Hematech sets sights on 2015

The founder of a Sioux Falls-based biotechnology firm hopes the biotechnology used to clone two cows can someday be used to manufacture and develop drugs to treat everything from staph infections to Alzheimer's disease.

"We hope by 2015 to have our initial revenue, and by 2020, we hope to be an established company with substantial development," said founder and president Jim Robl. "We would like to become a major biotechnology company with multibillion dollars a year in revenue. We feel with the products we are developing there are multiple blockbuster applications."

Robl offered his lofty comments after a news conference Thursday to celebrated the 10th birthdays this month of two cloned steers, Charlie and George. The two animals led to the creation of Hematech.
