A Spirited Disposition Debate

Supporters of a traditional curriculum have argued that evaluating students based on their commitment to social justice is an inherently subjective practice with ideological undertones. Late last year, the National Association of Scholars filed a complaint with the Education Department saying the accreditor encourages standards that violate students' First Amendment rights.

Arthur E. Wise, president of NCATE, has argued that the “disposition" component of evaluation helps education schools measure how their students would respond in a classroom setting. On Monday, as Wise sat before the Education Department’s National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity, which has the power to extend the council’s authority or set the agenda for changes, a set of critics raised the issue once again.

Hoeven has little to show for two terms

I am far from being a political expert but I do know how the political system effects me and my families way of life and I do see my property taxes going up each and every year and yet I don't see the benefits from the increased taxes. The easy answer by our local and State governments seems to raising taxes. I see nothing being done for tax relief. " .

Nursing home crackdown displaces hundreds

Hundreds of Tennessee nursing home residents have been displaced this year because of serious health and safety violations that caused the facilities to lose Medicare and Medicaid funding.

Five nursing homes, with a total of 750 beds, have lost Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services funding this year over reports of patient injuries and residents being restrained without consent, among others.

Richmond Braves coming to Gwinnett

Final details were being worked out Monday and a news conference has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gwinnett Center, said Center spokesman Chris Hendley, who declined to discuss the topic.

The Class AAA Richmond Braves, the organization's highest-level minor-league affiliate, could play in Gwinnett as soon as 2009. The Braves' three-year contract at the Richmond, Va. stadium, known as The Diamond, runs through the 2010 season, but the Braves have the option to pull out after the 2008 season. A stadium for the Richmond Braves could be built on land the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is expected to approve purchasing on Tuesday. Tuesday's commission agenda lists a $5 million "purchase and sale agreement" of about 12 acres of land owned by Brand Properties. Brand Morgan, Brand Properties owner, declined to comment on the sale or what the land will be used for, but did say he plans to attend a news conference at Gwinnett Center on Tuesday.
