| Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"
At what point will it be so ridiculously convoluted to hand merchants money that consumers will revolt? I can remember taking a product to a cashier, handing over some method of payment and leaving. Those were the days. Now, we're asked a growing number of questions as clerks punch in dozens of data points. "Do you have our preferred card? Can I have your phone number? Is there another number that might work? Do you want our card? What's your ZIP code? Debit or credit? You can swipe your card now. No, the other way. No, the other way. I'll just punch it in over here. Do you have another card? My computer screen is frozen, can you wait? I need to start over. What's your phone number? What's your ZIP code?" Then after you've run the gantlet of questions, they tell you how much money you've saved.

But she is quick to point out that some of the world's best-known runway and fashion models are aged well into their 30s and 40s. Ottawa fires nuclear safety commission head
The federal government has fired the head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, days after she publicly accused Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn of interfering with the independence of the arm's-length watchdog. The former head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Linda Keen, says she will appear at a parliamentary committee about the reactor closure on Wednesday.(CBC) "The president was aware of the importance of maintaining Canada's and the world's supply of medical isotopes," said the statement from Lunn's office. "However, given the growing crisis, she did not demonstrate the leadership expected of the president under the existing legislative provisions of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act to put the commission in a position to address the situation in a timely fashion." Lunn and Keen have been at odds since the 50-year-old Chalk River nuclear reactor was shut down in November, prompting a worldwide shortage of medical isotopes.
How to be Generous Without Spoiling the Grandkids
When my children were younger, their grandparents in New York kept a scrapbook of their favorite comic strips to read aloud when the kids came to visit. Meanwhile, their Pittsburgh grandparents sent them copious clippings about the Steelers, the kids' favorite football team. Both sets of grandparents bought traditional presents as well, but it was those gifts of time and thoughtfulness that were most memorable. And that's worth keeping in mind this holiday season, when gift-giving by grandparents, well-intentioned and generous as it may be, can cause tensions on both sides of the generation gap. Spirit of giving. In a recent survey by AARP Financial, 79% of the grandparents said that their grandkids don't understand the value of a dollar. (And they often say the same about their adult children.

In fact, Romney's ad stood out not so much for its negativity, but for its very existence in a year in which both parties are experiencing wide-open races for the White House. "There were lessons learned last time that no one wanted to repeat," said Steve McMahon, who worked for Howard Dean in the 2004 campaign and now is a Democratic strategist. "Namely that the attacker wasn't the beneficiary of the attack, and they turned out to be their own victim." In the past, "the Democrats were always having a food fight on its way to a fist fight on its way to a knife fight," added Dennis Goldford, a professor at Drake University who has studied Iowa's caucuses for two decades. This time, he said, "I think that while we had the occasional occurrence of something that seems like a personal attack, by and large it has been fairly civil." Among Republicans, he singled out Romney for his ads critical of Huckabee.

As an aside, every New Year's I am reminded of my first job out of college when I worked for a trucking company in their Mexico section. One of the big wig hooty-hoos was down from the corporate office in Kansas City, and he decided he wanted to walk the dock and talk to the men. When I told him they only speak Spanish, he just smiled at me with a wink and told me he had prepared for that. From my office window, I saw him walk to the dock and stop briefly to talk to each guy working their shift, and I saw them fall over laughing when he left. Curious, I asked them what he had said, to which they replied (when the could finally talk from laughing that he had wished them a "Feliz ano" In Spanish, "feliz" means "happy" and the word "year" is "ano" but with a squiggly above the "n" and is pronounced "an-yo" "Ano" is a word, but in Spanish it means "anus" Good luck to the Horns for next season, good luck to the teams remaining.
Struggling to Keep Black Students
I think we're going to see change with these creative scholarships and matching grants," Carroll said. Gordon Chavis, assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions at the University of Central Florida and a member of the governor's Access and Diversity Commission, said that “our foundation people" have been very positive about the matching grants program. Chavis said that people usually donate to a general scholarship fund, so getting donations specifically for first generation students might require new fund raising tactics. But he added that universities could use the opportunity to court donors who want to know exactly how their money will be used. Rosenberg added that the matching grants are part of “a culture of incentives within the system that we'd like to preserve." In California, the number of black students has declined since the voter-approved Proposition 209 outlawed using race in admissions in 1996.
