EMS flails against being gobbled up by Collier fire districts

Marco, Naples and EMS are not included in the above because as divisions of larger governments, all pass-throughs, subsidies and loans from other department funds could not accurately be accounted for. As Ave Maria University in eastern Collier, the Immokalee Fire Department will be responsible, in part, for providing fire-rescue service to the new town.

Also, as residential and commercial development continues along U.S. 41 East — beyond the turnoff to Goodland — East Naples, Golden Gate and Ochopee will have to provide fire and rescue service. Golden Gate and Ochopee firefighters do not have ALS divisions.

The upheaval threatens to put Nairobi on a list of foreign capitals where I once resided or visited regularly but which have become dangerous ground for foreign tourists or business people, journalists and, in many cases, the local population. A curtain of violence and of hostility toward outsiders has fallen over many parts of my journalistic history.

So when Kenya seems to be collapsing, I take it personally. It revives memories of seeing Lebanon tear itself apart around me, or watching from a distance as Algiers, Tehran, Baghdad, Mogadishu, Khartoum, Harare and a few of the other places I traveled to as a young foreign correspondent have been enveloped by long nights of horrific destruction, xenophobic revolution or both.

The list is not exhaustive, nor, as you may have suspected, is it truly just about my own experiences living or working in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The Hard Sell

He notes that the handful of films that have attempted to address topics of sexual relations have more often than not been spurned by audiences.

There are exceptions to El-Lozy’s theory. The critically acclaimed Omaret Yacoubian is an excellent example of how far the censors’ and audiences’ boundaries have expanded. With a number of graphic and garish scenes, the film tackled all aspects of social life in Egypt, from religiosity to homosexuality. It was also was one of the most successful Arab films of 2006, raking in LE 6 million in the June 25 opening week and LE 20 million over its entire run — typically, films are considered commercial successes if they net LE 4-6 million and are smash hits when they hit LE 10 million in box office.

A more conservative Egypt of the 1980s and early 1990s might never have allowed Yacoubian to see the light of day.

Dreaming about expedition to that secret lake

About then my friend Jim came into possession of an early model trail bike, really no more than a fat-tired motor scooter on a frame of heavy steel tubing. On our first trip we discovered that only one of us could ride the thing, and Jim putted off up the trail and disappeared out of sight as I trotted along behind. Seven or eight miles into what was then a primitive area, something bad happened to the bike. After Jim and I pushed that ungainly machine back out of the wilds, we resolved to give up the search for an easy way and just concentrate on fish. Soon enough, that area became designated wilderness anyway, with motorized use justifiably forbidden. These experiences took place before the backpacking equipment revolution. We thought we were pretty slick with our canvas packs lashed onto plywood frames.

Matthews unveils Clinton plan to make higher education more accessible

Increasing a tuition tax credit, increasing Pell grants and simplifying the student aid process are a few of the proposals Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton campaign officials unveiled Thursday morning as part of her effort to make college more affordable and accessible.Sen. John Matthews, a state co-chair of the Clinton presidential campaign, presented Clinton's educational plan during a press conference held on the s.jpg of Claflin University's Tingley Memorial Hall.Speaking to about 20 students gathered behind him, Matthews stressed the impact Clinton's plan would have on them and thousands of other college students."If we can reduce your cost to go to college, more of our children will have access and all of us will be better off," Matthews said. "This plan is intended to make sure that lower income students have a chance to compete in this knowledge-based economy by getting a college degree and reducing your burden when you get out of college.

"I'm telling you, I hated (the hurdles) during my sophomore year,'' Fergason said. "When I tried out for them, I thought it was the worst thing I've ever done, but I love a challenge.'' .
