| District spent $1.5 million on trips, catering
Despite promises to scale back travel and other nonessential expenses, Detroit Public Schools spent more than $1.5 million on hotels, travel and catered meals in the year that ended Sept. 1. That's comparable to what the district spent on food and travel during a similar time frame in 2005-2006. After the Free Press uncovered those expenses last February, school officials pledged they would rein in such spending. The expenses outraged parents and teachers in the cash-strapped district. .
Cool blue is the hot color of the moment
On the spring runways in New York last September, manicurists from Creative Nail Design used the frosty blue Turquoise Tint for Chris Han's show and custom-mixed tones of light blue for models at Karen Walker and Charlotte Ronson. In a recent GQ photo spread, Rihanna sported a robin's-egg-blue polish on her nails that threatened to pull focus from her skimpy gold Tomas Meier swimsuit. Sky, the Hard Candy shade made famous in 1995 when Alicia Silverstone name-dropped it on "Late Show With David Letterman," is also back on the market. But nostalgic fans hoping to score a bottle — with matching plastic ring — may have to do a bit of digging. Sephora, the line's exclusive purveyor, is sold out of the $7 color on its Web site. A similar shade, For Audrey by China Glaze ($6.50), nearly matches a Tiffany & Co.'s trademark color.

Loan Scandal Escalates
When Andrew M. Cuomo started asking questions about the relationships between lenders and colleges, many in higher education scoffed (off the record) that this was a case of an ambitious politician looking for headlines and that there wasn’t much for his inquiry to find. There’s no doubt that Cuomo, New York State’s new attorney general, is an ambitious politician looking for headlines, but he’s finding more and more to investigate. And some experts on aid are increasingly worried that the scandal is going to scare some students and families away from borrowing or from getting advice from financial aid offices. .
Columbia City weathers storm, beats Carroll
The Lady Eagles built up a 19-point lead through the first three quarters and needed a good deal of it as the Lady Chargers made both defensive and offensive adjustments that held Columbia City without a field goal in the fourth quarter as the hosts cut the lead in half. In the first half, the Lady Chargers chose to double and triple-team Columbia City center Nicole Ott, freeing other Lady Eagles for open looks. In the first quarter freshman Sierria Burlage profited from the strategy scoring six points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field. While the Lady Eagles were shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, a stingy perimeter defense from Columbia City was forcing the Lady Chargers into nine first quarter turnovers and limiting them to 2-of-9 shooting from the field.

Bush calls for $145B package to boost sagging economy
WASHINGTON — President Bush, acknowledging the risk of recession, embraced about $145 billion worth of tax relief today to give the economy a ``shot in the arm. `` Bush said such a growth package must also include tax incentives for business investment and quick tax relief for individuals. And he said that to be effective, an economic stimulus package would need to roughly represent 1 percent of the gross domestic product — the value of all U.S. goods and services and the best measure of the country's economic standing. .
GOP Candidates Focus On South Carolina
Two polls out today confirm McCain's frontrunner status in the state. The Greenville (SC) News reports that a Clemson University poll "of 450 prospective" South Carolina GOP primary voters conducted Jan. 9-16 shows McCain leading with 29%, followed by Huckabee, 22%; Romney, 13%; and Thompson, 10%. However, "nearly 40 percent of the respondents said they were unsure how they would vote in Saturday's Republican presidential primary." A Zogby International poll out this morning shows McCain leading in South Carolina with 29%, followed by Huckabee, 22%; Fred Thompson, 14%; Romney, 12%; Paul, 5%; and Giuliani, 5%. Commenting on the results, pollster John Zogby said this morning, "There was no discernible bump for Romney coming out of Michigan. We are also seeing that any pickup for Fred Thompson hurts Mike Huckabee in this race, which is as close as any we have seen." The poll surveyed 815 likely GOP primary voters from January 14-16.
