Contractor loses La. scholarship account data dating back to 1998

BATON ROUGE, La. -- A Boston-based contractor hired to store and safeguard state scholarship and college savings account data lost most of those records _ including bank account numbers and student and parent Social Security numbers _ during a move, officials say.

"We certainly don't want to create any panic. But people should be aware and take the necessary steps," said Melanie Amrhein, executive director of the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance. "This is backup data off of a mainframe that contains sensitive personal information."

Special equipment and software and "sophisticated computer skills" would be needed to get the compressed records from the TOPS scholarship program, START Saving Program, and Free Application for Federal Student Aid, according to a notice posted on the Internet.

IT'S A CHORE: But farmers have to fill out forms or possibly face ...

Last year, Tom Dancer farmed approximately 500 acres, all but a few rented, in Freehold, Manalapan and Millstone townships, growing field corn, soybeans, rye straw and wheat.

That quick profile of Dancer, a 49-year-old lifelong farmer who lives in Millstone, is the kind of information the U.S. Department of Agriculture seeks in its five-year census of farmers in the 50 states and Puerto Rico.

The census is important in drawing up farming legislation, determining how federal agriculture money is distributed and positioning farming support services, according to state Secretary of Agriculture Charles M. Kuperus and Troy Joshua, director of New Jersey farming statistics for the USDA.

Also, the census will provide financial figures for a state industry that is under-recognized in terms of dollars, said Peter J.

Magic hold on to defeat Trail Blazers 101-94

The Orlando Magic nearly began the second half of the season the way they ended the first half.

Letting a big lead get away.

Instead, the Magic (25-17) recovered after losing most of a 21-point lead and beat the upstart Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night 101-94 at Amway Arena.

They see Mc Cain, the pro immigration, anti tax cutting, Mc Cain/Feingold. OR..Huckabee, pro immigration, pro tax history, unelectable.

These two are whom the MSM seem to want to run. So they are getting two the left can beat, and even if they don't beat them they will get a flood of immigration, and tax hikes so they win even if they loose. So we cut off Fox because we are pissed.

The person that I feel comes closest to a real conservativeis Fred, 5th place in a race of 6.

I telling you now, it will be a long time in the wilderness again, (thanks Bush, and the over spending congress)+ open borders!

Between business that want open borders, and every politician thinks that they will stay in office because the immigrants will vote for them.

The conservatives will stay home again.

LCC registration system produces more headaches for students, staff

Midway through the first week of classes at Lansing Community College, Reba Milow still was trying to register.

The school's online registration system hadn't been working, and the East Lansing 18-year-old, who had come to campus to get her schedule worked out with an actual person, was frustrated.

"I cannot drop classes. I cannot register for classes," she said. "The furthest I can go is to log into my account, but, as far as registration or anything like that, it won't even open up."

Nursing home crackdown displaces hundreds

Hundreds of Tennessee nursing home residents have been displaced this year because of serious health and safety violations that caused the facilities to lose Medicare and Medicaid funding.

Five nursing homes, with a total of 750 beds, have lost Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services funding this year over reports of patient injuries and residents being restrained without consent, among others.

Candidates debate whether election rides on power plant

The potential split vote among candidates that are skeptical of the power plant is a concern to Highwood Generating Station opponents. Kahn said some coal-fired plant foes asked her to drop out of the race, a move that would have given McKnight a better chance against Stebbins. Kahn declined to do so.

Kahn said that the coal-fired facility wasn't the only issue that made her run. Kahn said that as she campaigned door to door in her neighborhood, the power plant issue was tops. But, she said, a number of people complained about how the city treated the Humane Society of Cascade County when the city took over the local animal shelter in July.

Meanwhile, coal plant opponents may hold a bit of an edge in the commissioners' race, according to at least one candidate.

"It's the math," McKnight said.

Rocky Mountain News

Every day it seems there's more bad news for Beauprez. The Rocky editorial page ripped the Beauprez campaign for distorting a Ritter quote that had run - yes - on the Rocky editorial page. The Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald had a story about Beauprez criticizing the management style of Bill Owens, who is his most important supporter.

Ritter, meanwhile, pounds him on Ref C, on which Beauprez picked the losing side. And Beauprez responds by criticizing Ritter for plea-bargaining with illegal immigrants. Yes, Ritter was the Denver DA. Yes, he plea-bargained, even with illegal immigrants.

Did he plea bargain with more than 70 percent of the cases? Maybe.

But as far as we know, he hasn't had to apologize for any of them. So who would you guess that puts in the lead? You do the math.
